If you’ve ever thought about creating passive income, you’ve probably looked at online courses, memberships or digital products at some point (and if you’re anything like many of the entrepreneurs I speak to), you’ve probably felt a little overwhelmed by the whole thing!

You start researching online courses and suddenly it feels like you need ten modules, hours of video content, a complicated funnel and months of work before you can even think about making a sale. It’s no wonder so many people put it off!

The good news is that creating passive income doesn’t have to start with building a huge online course. In fact, I often encourage people to start much smaller…that’s where micro offers come in.

In fact, I believe micro offers are one of the fastest and simplest ways for service providers to start creating scalable income without building a full online course.

In this article you’ll learn:

  • What a micro offer is
  • How micro offers differ from freebies and tripwires
  • Examples of successful micro offers
  • Why they’re perfect for service providers
  • How to come up with your first micro offer idea

Let’s dive in…

What is a micro offer?

A micro offer is a small digital product that solves a specific problem for a specific person. It’s usually priced somewhere between £7 and £47 and is designed to help someone achieve a quick win.

The important thing to understand is that a micro offer isn’t designed to solve every problem your audience has.

It’s designed to solve one problem.

That’s it…

One challenge, one solution and one outcome!

For example, a micro offer might be:

  • A workbook
  • A template
  • A checklist
  • A mini training
  • A swipe file
  • A resource guide
  • An AI prompt pack
  • A Notion planner
  • A digital toolkit

The purpose isn’t to completely transform somebody’s life overnight. It’s purpose is to help them take one step forward and often that’s exactly what people are looking for because while we as business owners often think people want huge transformations, many people are simply looking for help solving the problem that’s right in front of them.

Why I love micro offers

One of the reasons I love micro offers so much is because they remove a lot of the pressure. So many entrepreneurs believe they need to create something massive before they can start selling digital products. They spend months creating content, building resources and perfecting every detail but a micro offer allows you to start much sooner.

Instead of creating a 12-week programme, you create a solution to one problem.

Instead of spending 6 months building, you can often create a micro offer in a matter of days.

Instead of wondering whether anyone will buy from you, you can start validating your ideas much more quickly.

I also love micro offers because they help people move from being followers to becoming customers which is such an important shift.

Somebody can listen to your podcast every week, follow you on social media and read your emails for months but the moment they buy from you (even if it’s only a £17 product), the relationship changes because they’ve invested in themselves and they’ve invested in your expertise. Also, if they have a positive experience, they’re far more likely to buy from you again in the future.

The benefits of creating a micro offer

There are so many benefits to creating a micro offer, especially if you’re just getting started with digital products or looking for a simple way to create an additional income stream in your business.

Here are some of the reasons I recommend them so often:

  • Quick to Create
Unlike a full online course or membership, a micro offer can often be created in a matter of days rather than months. The goal is to solve one specific problem, which means you don’t need dozens of lessons or hours of content.
  • Easy to Validate
Before investing huge amounts of time creating a larger offer, a micro offer allows you to test whether people are willing to pay for your idea. This can give you valuable feedback and confidence before creating something bigger.

  • Generates Income Faster
Because micro offers are simple and focused, you can get them to market quickly and start generating sales sooner. Rather than spending months building behind the scenes, you can begin earning while you learn.
  • Helps Turn Followers Into Customers
Many business owners have an audience but struggle to make sales. A micro offer provides a low-risk way for people to buy from you for the first time, helping you move followers, subscribers and community members into paying customers.
  • Can Lead to Higher-Ticket Offers
A micro offer is often the first step in a customer’s journey. Once someone has experienced a quick win from your micro offer, they may be more likely to invest in your course, programme, membership or coaching offer in the future.
  • Builds Confidence Selling Digital Products
One of the biggest barriers to creating passive income is believing that people will actually buy from you. Every sale of a micro offer provides proof that your knowledge has value and helps build confidence in your ability to sell digital products online.

The beauty of micro offers is that they allow you to start small, gain momentum and learn what your audience wants before creating more complex offers.

For many entrepreneurs, they become the perfect stepping stone from selling time to selling expertise.

What’s the difference between a freebie, a tripwire and a micro offer?

This is something that often causes confusion because people tend to use these terms interchangeably.

A freebie is designed to attract people into your world. Its job is to help you grow your audience and build your email list… a free guide, checklist or training would all fall into this category.

A tripwire is a low-cost offer that is presented immediately after someone downloads your freebie. For example, someone signs up for your free guide and is then offered a £17 workbook on the thank-you page. That’s a tripwire.

A micro offer is slightly different because a micro offer is a standalone product. You can sell it through your podcast, social media, email list, YouTube channel, workshops or webinars. It doesn’t need to sit behind a freebie (it can if you want it to) but it doesn’t have to. It’s simply a small but valuable solution that helps somebody achieve a specific result.

Real examples of micro offers

The best micro offers are often hiding in plain sight and they’re usually based on the questions people ask you all the time.

For example, if you’re a business coach, you could create:

  • A business planning workbook
  • A content strategy planner
  • A customer journey template

If you’re a fitness coach, you could create:

  • A meal planning guide
  • A beginner workout programme
  • A 30-day fitness planner

If you’re a social media manager, you might create:

  • Canva templates
  • Caption packs
  • A content planning system

As an Online Business Strategist, one of my own micro offers is the Passive Profit Accelerator.

I created it because I realised that many entrepreneurs know they want passive income but have absolutely no idea where to start. So rather than teaching everything there is to know about passive income, I focused on solving one specific problem. Helping someone move from… “I know I need passive income” to “I have a clear plan for creating it“.

That’s the power of a micro offer!

Why micro offers are perfect for service providers

If you’re currently selling your time, I believe micro offers can be one of the best places to start.

Most service providers have years of experience, knowledge and expertise that they use every single day. The problem is that they’re often only being paid when they’re actively working with clients and that’s where the time-for-money trap begins.

Micro offers allow you to start packaging your expertise into assets so instead of answering the same question repeatedly, you create a resource that answers it for you.

Instead of delivering the same advice over and over again, you package it into a digital product.

You create it once and then you can sell it again and again!

Now, I’m not suggesting a £27 workbook is suddenly going to replace your income overnight but it is the first step towards creating a business that isn’t completely dependent on your time and that’s often where greater freedom, flexibility and scalability begin.

How to come up with your first micro offer idea

If you’re reading this and wondering what your micro offer could be, start by asking yourself a few simple questions…

  • What do people ask me for help with all the time?
  • What problem do I repeatedly solve for clients?
  • What process do I find myself explaining again and again?
  • What quick win could I help somebody achieve?

The answers are often right in front of you (and remember), the goal isn’t to create something huge… in fact, smaller is often better!

The simpler the offer, the easier it is for people to understand, buy and implement.

Start Small and Build Momentum

The biggest mistake I see entrepreneurs make is waiting until they have the perfect course, membership or programme before they start selling digital products.

The truth is, you don’t need a huge offer to get started.

A simple micro offer can help you validate your idea, generate your first digital product sales and begin building a business that isn’t solely dependent on your time.

Start small, get results and then build from there!
