If you’re juggling client work, content creation, inbox overload and still trying to launch new offers… it’s no wonder you’re feeling stretched.

The good news?

Business automation can be your secret weapon for building momentum without burning out.

Automation isn’t about turning your business into a lifeless robot. It’s about creating smart systems that free up your time, energy and headspace so you can focus on what really matters: serving your people and growing your income.

Why automation matters in an online business

Here’s something I always tell my clients… automation is a way to serve your audience better.

It creates consistency, it builds trust and it allows someone across the world to discover your work, sign up for your freebie, buy a digital product and feel fully supported… all while you’re sleeping!

I’ll never forget the first time I woke up to a Stripe notification for a sale that happened overnight. I genuinely thought it was a mistake but sure enough, someone had downloaded my free guide, gone through my email funnel and bought one of my low-ticket offers. All while I was fast asleep.

That was the moment automation clicked for me.

It’s not about doing less, it’s about doing it once, doing it well and letting your systems do the heavy lifting from there.

What should you automate?

If you’re wondering where to start, here are 5 areas of your business that are perfect for automation:

1. Lead Generation & Email Nurture

Create a free lead magnet (like a guide, checklist or mini-training) and link it to a pre-written welcome sequence. That way, when someone joins your list, they’re immediately introduced to you, your story and your paid offers (without you ever needing to hit send!).

2. Sales Processes

Ever heard of a tripwire?

That’s a low-cost offer that appears right after someone downloads your freebie. You can set this up once and it sells on autopilot — often for something like £27 or £47. Add an evergreen funnel behind it and you’re building a scalable system with minimal manual effort.

3. Client Onboarding

If you still work 1:1 or run group programs, automate your onboarding process. Set up an intake form, calendar link, contract and welcome email series that gets sent out automatically once someone signs up.

4. Course or Membership Delivery

Use platforms like Systeme.io to handle product delivery. This tool automatically send login details, track student progress and even send reminders (all without you needing to be involved).

5. Content Repurposing

This one’s semi-automated but still a major time-saver. Use tools like Repurpose.io, Descript or Notion templates to help you turn one piece of content (like a podcast or blog) into Instagram posts, emails, Pinterest pins and more (without starting from scratch each time).

My go-to automation tools

You don’t need a tech degree or 10 different software platforms to get started. In fact, I’m a big fan of the “lean and clean” approach… use what works and only what you actually need.

Here’s what I use (and recommend to my clients):

  • Email Marketing & FunnelsSysteme.io
  • Checkout + Product Delivery: Systeme.io
  • Calendar Bookings: Systeme.io
  • Content Organisation: Notion + custom templates for planning and repurposing
  • Automation Connector: Zapier (to make sure all my tools “talk” to each other)

Whatever you choose, remember: tools are just that… tools. What matters more is the system you build around them.

Automation mistakes to avoid

As powerful as automation is, it’s easy to fall into a few traps so here’s what to watch out for:

1. Automating chaos

If your offer or messaging isn’t clear, automating it won’t help… it’ll just amplify the confusion. Always start with clarity first.

2. Overcomplicating the process

You don’t need a 97-step funnel, just start simple:

Freebie → Welcome Sequence → Entry-Level Offer → Nurture

3. Losing the human touch

Automation should still feel personal so make sure your emails and thank-you pages sound like you because a little warmth goes a long way!

4. Set and forget

Just because it’s automated doesn’t mean it’s permanent. Review your systems every few months… update links, refresh copy and make sure your messaging still aligns with your brand.
