Let’s talk about online courses, not just from the business perspective, but from a more personal angle.

If you’ve ever toyed with the idea of creating a course but felt unsure of where to start or wondered whether it would even make a difference, this is for you.

Online courses can be transformational. And I don’t use that word lightly.

I say this not only as someone who now helps entrepreneurs build their own online courses, but as someone who was once a student, taking every course I could get my hands on to figure out my next move. Courses didn’t just give me skills. They gave me clarity, direction, and confidence – things I was sorely lacking during some very confusing stages of my life.

A New Chapter Begins with a Choice

Years ago, I found myself in a job that felt completely out of alignment with who I was and what I wanted. I didn’t know exactly what needed to change, but I knew something had to.

I used to daydream a lot about the kind of work I wanted to do.

I wanted a creative career where I woke up and felt excited to start the day. I didn’t know what that would look like, but I knew what I had wasn’t it. I was restless, frustrated, and constantly comparing myself to others who seemed to be getting on just fine.

It was during this time that I started exploring courses.

Not the kind of formal education that takes years to complete but short, focused courses that helped me up-skill, shift direction, and test new waters.

I wanted to become a graphic designer but at the time, that felt miles away from my reality. So I started slowly. I took weekend courses, digital masterclasses, anything I could fit around my full-time job. I wasn’t even sure where it would lead, but I knew it was a step forward.

The Power of Small Steps

I spent 5 years quietly working on my craft, building a portfolio, learning design software, understanding what made good design good. It was hard. It was lonely at times but it also gave me a sense of purpose.

Eventually, I went back to university as a mature student to get my degree in Graphic Media. That was a pivotal moment – one that wouldn’t have happened without those earlier courses giving me the confidence and foundational knowledge to make such a leap.

By the time I graduated, I’d managed to completely shift the trajectory of my life. I landed a design job at a national brand and for the first time in a long time, I felt aligned. I was doing the work I once only dreamed about. I’d made it.

Or so I thought.

The Next Level of Transformation

Even with that dream job, something felt off again.

I knew I didn’t want to go backwards, but I couldn’t ignore the nagging feeling that there was still more out there for me.

At this stage, I had children, responsibilities, and very little room for spontaneous life changes. But that feeling persisted. I started thinking more seriously about creating a business of my own. I didn’t know what kind of business. I just knew I wanted autonomy, creative freedom, and the ability to design my life around my family and not the other way around!

One morning, without a clear plan but with a whole lot of conviction, I told my husband: “I’m going to start my own business.”

That’s when the real learning began.

Learning Never Stops

Starting a business from scratch (especially with no previous business experience) was a steep learning curve. But again, online courses were there for me. I took business courses, marketing courses, branding workshops. Every new challenge I faced became a new opportunity to learn.

And slowly, brick by brick, I built something I’m incredibly proud of.

Now, I help other business owners package their knowledge into online courses, and I do it with the full understanding of just how powerful these tools can be.

Why Online Courses Matter

The truth is, a course can completely change someone’s life.

Not every course needs to be groundbreaking. Some will simply give your students a small win… an “aha” moment, a burst of confidence, a new skill that makes their day-to-day easier. But over time, those wins stack up.

Courses are about empowerment.

They’re about providing people with tools and clarity. Sometimes, they’re about unlocking a path someone didn’t even know was available to them.

You may be sitting on years (or even decades) of experience that someone else desperately needs. What feels obvious to you could be life-changing to someone else.

And for you, as a business owner, creating an online course can give you more freedom, financial stability, and impact than you ever imagined. It allows you to serve more people without burning yourself out, and it gives you a way to share your expertise at scale.

Your Course Doesn’t Have to Change the World!

…but it might change someone’s world.

You never know what someone is going through when they land on your sales page. You don’t know what season of life they’re in, what dreams they’re quietly nurturing, or how stuck they feel. But if your online course helps them move from confusion to clarity, or from “I can’t” to “I did!” then you’ve done something powerful.

And if you’ve been wondering whether creating a course is worth it (whether it’s something you could even do) let me assure you… it is! You absolutely can, and the impact you could make might be greater than you think!
