If you’ve ever dreamed of making money while you sleep, taking time off without watching your income plummet, or simply building more freedom into your business then you’re in the right place.

In this article, I will walk through a practical, doable roadmap to help you create passive income in your business, no matter your industry or stage of growth.

This isn’t about overnight success or “set it and forget it” myths. It’s about strategic systems that allow you to earn consistently from your knowledge, even when you’re not actively delivering a service.

5 Step Roadmap

Here’s your 5-step roadmap to building sustainable passive income.

Step 1: Clarify What You Want Passive Income to Do For You

Before diving into the how, let’s start with the why.

Passive income isn’t just about more money… it’s about more choice.

  • Do you want to reduce your 1:1 client hours?
  • Create a backup revenue stream?
  • Travel more?
  • Spend time with your kids?

When you’re clear on what success looks like for you, you’re more likely to build something that aligns with your goals, lifestyle, and capacity. Without this clarity, it’s easy to create something that still feels like a job or worse becomes another drain on your time.

Take 5 minutes to ask yourself:

  • How much passive income do I want to make?
  • How many hours a week do I realistically want to spend on it?
  • What kind of product feels exciting (not exhausting) to create?

Step 2: Identify Your Sweet Spot

Next, we need to figure out what you’re going to turn into a passive product.

Look at your current business: What do people constantly ask you about? What results have you helped others get repeatedly? What do you do in your sleep that others find complicated?

This is your expertise sweet spot… where your knowledge overlaps with what your audience is actively searching for. Passive income doesn’t work if nobody wants what you’re selling. So validation is key.

One of my favourite ways to validate an idea is to create a low-ticket offer, like a £27 mini course, workshop, or toolkit, and see if people buy it. That initial traction tells you you’re onto something. You don’t need thousands of followers, you need a specific solution for a specific group of people.

Step 3: Choose the Right Passive Income Product

Passive income can come in many forms, so it’s important to pick one that suits your skills, audience, and goals.

Here are a few examples:

  • Digital products (templates, planners, toolkits)
  • Online courses (self-paced with evergreen access)
  • Memberships (monthly or annual access to a library of content)
  • Affiliate marketing (earning commissions from other people’s products)

If you’re just starting out, I recommend beginning with a digital product under £50. It’s quicker to create, easier to sell, and gives you a great way to test your ideas before building something bigger.

Step 4: Build a Simple Funnel That Sells For You

Here’s where the magic happens.

Creating a great product is only half the equation, you also need a system that brings people to it and helps them say “yes” without your constant involvement.

Enter: the evergreen funnel.

This might look like:

  1. A freebie (guide, checklist, or training) that solves a small problem.
  2. A thank-you page that introduces your low-ticket product.
  3. A short email sequence that educates and sells the product.
  4. Optional: an upsell or next step for customers who buy.

When done well, this funnel can run in the background while you focus on other parts of your business or take a proper weekend off.

Step 5: Scale With Systems

Once you’ve proven your product sells and your funnel converts, it’s time to scale.

This might mean:

  • Driving traffic through Pinterest, SEO, or podcasting.
  • Collaborating with others in your niche to cross-promote.
  • Repurposing content to bring in fresh leads every week.
  • Adding automation, like upsells, bundles, or email sequences that nurture buyers into repeat customers.

Scaling doesn’t mean doing more, it means doing the right things more consistently. The goal here is to create systems that grow your income without growing your hours.
